‘ I have actually discovered that books can transfer children to another place.’ Judith has been offering as a bedside reader at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust considering that 2003. After retiring from mentor, Judith wished to continue to utilize her storytelling skills to assist kids who are poorly. ‘I had always enjoyed reading to the children in school at the end of the day. You might see them noticeably relax and be by the story. I believed this might also apply to kids in medical facility. I offer on the kids’s oncology wards in the medical facility. I have actually witnessed the diversion reading a story can do to support the personnel. The kids are little heroes. Mark joined the NHS in his 30s after leaving his family’s organization without any official certifications, however a drive to make a distinction. He began as a mental health support worker and went on to train as a general nurse. He certified at 37 and spent the next 20 years progressively climbing the ladder. He even went back to work in the same medical facility ward he was born in, taking on the function of ward manager. ‘ I tried to change off a bedside lamp and seemed like something wasn’t right with me. I understood directly away it was a stroke.’ In July 2023, after an active holiday kayaking and walking, Bob all of a sudden had a stroke. He was flown by air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he spent 4 weeks rehabilitating. ‘I utilized the gym frequently and did neurorehabilitation online (NROL)’. NROL is a group rehabilitation program for individuals who have had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. ‘I had a structured schedule which provided me something to look forward to each week – socially, psychologically and mentally.’ Bob thanked NHS personnel for ‘the wonderful assistance’ and the ongoing physiotherapy he received. ‘ Working together with nurses and seeing the distinction they made inspired me to think, ‘I could do that!” Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who started her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she signed up with Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve patients in Hertfordshire. ‘I enjoyed assisting people and learning more about the body, so nursing just felt right.’ Sharon shows. Sharon has actually worked in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy among others, showing the wide variety of locations in which nurses make a difference. ‘Truly, I can’t consider a location where nurses don’t make an impact in some form,’ Sharon admits. On why her function is special, Sharon discusses, ‘The care, generosity, and empathy we bring make the nursing role distinct. As patient advocates, we assist guarantee their journey is supported, informed, and truly significant.’ There are more than 50 different types of nursing roles offered in the NHS.
